Maple Ridge, BC
Ten members of the Junior Development KajaksFam competed at the 2019 BC Athletics Junior Development Pentathlon Championships held this past weekend (July 13, 2019) in Maple Ridge. Led by our amazing Kajaks Coaching staff, our club contingent was made up of both pentathlon first-timers and veterans. At the end of the event, our athletes walked away with 12 personal bests and 15 first time performances (first time an athlete has participated in an event).
“It was quite an eventful Saturday,” said Junior Development coach Lee Hunter speaking on the weekends results. “Ten athletes participated in the event with Ryan Nickerson being the only one to have competed in the pentathlon previously. We had 3 top 8 results [and] there were a lot of PB’s in individual events.” Reflecting on some gutsy performances, Coach Hunter recalls, “Poor Katie [Kennedy] no-heighted in the high jump but stormed back in the 600m to finish in the top 8. Tre [Graff] had so many PB’s. His high jump was amazing. A week and a half ago 1 meter was a challenge. He cleared 1.17m. Lots of good results in that regard.” Looking back at this year’s competition, and confident in what lies ahead, coach Hunter noted that, “Kajaks has lots of potential for next year.”
Congrats to all our KajaksFam athletes who competed in this past weekend’s event! You did us all Proud!
