Kajaks is pleased to present the Steveston Icebreaker 8K Run/Walk, Richmond’s first road race of the year, first race in the Lifestages Lower Mainland Road Race Series and second race of the BC Super Series! If you’re looking for a FUN, FLAT and FAST race to start your year on the right foot (or left), register for the Icebreaker today.  Join us in the historical Steveston Village for a scenic run along the mouth of the fraser river, and enjoy post-race festivities including hot soup and pizza! To be accepted as an complementary elite entry athletes must have achieved the following standards during 2017:

  • Women’s Standard: 28:00
  • Men’s Standard: 25:00

Understanding that the 8K distance is not contested frequently, the Icebreaker 8K will also accept the following equivalent times for the 5K and/or 10K

  • Women’s 5K/10K Equivalent Standard: 16:30 / 34:30
  • Men’s 5K/10K Equivalent Standard: 15:00 / 30:30

Flat and fast BC Athletics sanctioned course through historic Steveston village and along dykes for your personal best time!  The perfect race to start the year!


Water available at start, finish and mid-course.  Toilets at start and finish, and public washrooms along course at 2.3K and 3.9K. First Aid available.


Facilities parking is available at the Steveston Community Centre, the lot directly across the street and along the streets in some locations.  Washrooms are located at the community centre.


Join Kajaks for a post-race social event at the Steveston Community Centre including soup, pizza and coffee!


Complimentary Gear Check starting at 7:30 AM in the Steveston Community Centre or there will be an additional Gear Check available steps away from the Start-Finish Line (Unit 115 4020 Bayview Street) south of the start line.


For safety purposes, participants with walking poles, strollers or baby joggers MUST start at the back of the pack and must walk the route. Sorry no dogs or pets on course.

There will a be the grand draw prize of two new pair of New Balance shoes, and a night stay in the Vancouver  Airport Hilton – must be present to win one of the grand prize draws.


A presentation for the top 3 male and female finishers will be at 10:00am. Top three finishers from each age group category will receive medal, please pick-up from the registration table inside Steveston Community Centre after the race.


From 9:30am onwards, food and beverages will be served inside Steveston Community Centre. There will also be free massages from Life Mark, community and road race booths, music, fabulous draw prizes, a stretching area and an award presentation for top overall male and female finishers.

The Icebreaker 8K is pleased to host its first ever Run Expo after the race in the Steveston Community Centre gymnasium from 9:00am to 12:00pm.  The expo is FREE to the public, for all to enjoy. Featuring exhibitors and major athletic brands, find everything from local sport organizations to tips on active lifestyle and sports performance. There will be food and drink sampling, hands-on treatments, free giveaways and more.

HiltonHey Out-of-Town Runners – SIGN UP for the Icebreaker 8K Run/Walk and get an incredible rate at the Vancouver Airport Hilton Hotel. $129 per night! When you call to reserve just let them know you’ll be in town for the Steveston IceBreaker race. The  Hilton Vancouver Airport located at 5911 Minoru Blvd, Richmond, BC V6X 4C7.

Free Parking is located at the Steveston Community Centre and/or street parking at Bayview Street, which is steps away from the start line.  First come, first serve.

There will be free taping and massages provided by our generous partners at Life Mark Sports Medicine! Taping and massage will be provided between pre race between 8:00AM-8:45AM and post race between 9:30AM-11:00AM in the Steveston Community Centre Gymnasium.

Can I register at package pickup or on race day for the Icebreaker?

Yes, but we only accept cash. There is no ATM on site, but there is ATM at the RBC a few blocks away. Please note the price increase for registration during package pick-up and race day. Sorry, we do not accept cheques.


Is the Icebreaker race officially timed with results posted online?

Yes, the race is chip-timed. The results will be available within 30 minutes of completion of the race and will be posted online shortly afterwards on Startline Timing’s website: www.startlinetiming.com Furthermore, all results will be posted on the Icebreaker’s website with 48 hours of the completion of the race.


Where does my registration money go?

All the proceeds raised from the Icebreaker go to Kajaks Track & Field Club, a not-for-profit community sports organization. Thank you for your support.


Do you give complementary entries to elite athletes?

Yes, if you meet the qualifying standards in the past twelve months, please email the race director directly at kajaksroadrace@gmail.com with proof of your time and contact information. Please note the standards are posted in the Results and Course Records Section on the Icebreaker webpage.


Can I transfer my race registration?

Yes, this is done through the online registration and there is a $15 service fee. Please note we do not accept race transfer at package pick up or on race day.


Can I have someone else pick up my race package?

Yes, please give them your e-mail address you registered with or a piece of your identification.


I registered online but I did not receive an e-mail confirmation from Running Room.

Contact the race director or the Running Room helpdesk and someone can review your registration for confirmation of your registration. Someone will resend an email confirmation to you. You should also ensure that you add Running Room to your safe list; we cover this in our help menu here.


I registered online but cannot see myself on the race confirmation list.

If you have selected not to be on the confirmation list during the registration process, you will not appear on the confirmation list and your name will not appear on the sponsor an athlete page. Please contact our help desk at raceregistration@runningroom.zendesk.com and they can review your race registration and ‘un-hide’ your name.


Are strollers allowed?

Unfortunately, for safety reasons strollers are not permitted. Sorry for the inconvenience.


Can I bring my dog/pet to this event?

No, unless you are visually impaired and it is your legal guide/service dog.


What if there is a snowfall or ice on the course?

The course is salted and then a thorough walk-through is done each year to make sure it is safe for all the participants. If there is large snowfall that jeopardizes the safety of the course, a notification will be posted on the Icebreaker’s website 24 hours before the race’s start time and an e-mail will be sent to participants that checked the box to receive e-mails. Please note Kajaks Track & Field Club does not take responsibility for a force majeure. In the event of cancellation, participants will be provided with either a partial refund or a credit to next year’s race.
